This is what Jean Francois Lyotard calls the pure case study in libidinal economy. If you are significatelly better in some way than others you must suffer in some way too. This is why this film fascinates me so much. I have never expected Italians to make this kind of movie because they were never actually the champions of female libs. And this movie has many plans and levels and one of them is most arguably a feminist one. Woman who is isolated from others because of some reason ( in this case envy ) is someone everybody feels entitled to molest and insult. It is no chance that Malena is a beautiful woman, not a beautiful man. Can you imagine beautiful young man in any society and in any era having yo endure Malena' s destiny ( except if he was in prison full of male lovers). No, just because of the fact he would be un uommo forte , a strong man, and Malena is apecar de todo, against all things, solamente una donna fragile, a fragil woman with no significant physical force to bit the shit out off her molesters of all genders.
